In Memoriam
My Friend Nikki
This is not an easy post to write but is one coming from the heart. On October 17, 2026, this world lost the physical presence of my friend Nikki, but her spirit remains strong in those of us privileged to know her. And by providing a glimpse of what Nikki meant to me, I hope to add you to that circle.
Nikki came into my life as a colleague and in our 19 some years of working together became family. She was always present for me and I hope me for her. We started our work days with a phone call to check in which in retirement became a daily email.

Early Years
Ironically, our relationship as colleagues cemented when Nikki was sent by our then manager to observe whether or not I was handling a state relationship properly. Whatever Nikki had been told of my supposed short comings, she approached the situation by treating me fairly. By the end of our trip, I gained a supporter and valued colleague.
Excellence
Our work required a range of skillsets, running the gamut from managing diverse relationships (anyone from governors to administrative clerks) and the capacity to make complex proposals winning propositions. Nikki mastered them all.
Through collaboration, our connection grew. Of all of us on our team, Nikki’s approach to RFPs (request for proposals) was the best. She was the master of stripping down complexity to organized pieces and possessed the ability to delegate appropriately. Working with her was a lesson in “how to.”
Travel
Over the years, we travelled together many times for work. Gradually, what started as a valued colleague relationship morphed into a friendship. From a raft trip in Jackson Hole to closing Broadway on the last night before the Covid shut down, we enjoyed each other’s company.

Evolution of a Friendship
We shared good times and supported each other in bad. Nikki became a grandmother; I married Russ. Her father died and I lost my mother. Our friendship became a pillar of my support system.
Retirement

Retirement
On April 4, 2025 both of us retired and the next phase of our friendship began. Nikki accompanied Russ and I on our move to Montpellier. Her time here was fast paced as we strode to equip Russ and my empty apartment to a livable space
Since Russ and I committed to a no-car lifestyle, multitudes of tram rides occurred. On one, I thought I caught Nikki’s eye to signal departing at a stop. No such luck. I thought I’d lost her for good because I couldn’t even call her as our phones weren’t set up yet.
Nikki got off at the next stop and made her way back. I never had to tell her husband Paul that his wife was riding a tram somewhere in Montpellier…
Instead, after completing much of the apartment set up, Nikki and I travelled to Paris for several fun-filled days and she returned to the states.
The next year and a half Nikki and I emailed daily. Zoom calls were a regular event. We shared our first year of retirement and grew as friends.

Godspeed
And then, cancer happened. On our last Zoom together, Nikki looked like her usual put-together self as she took the call from her hospital bed. It would be less than 6 weeks until Paul called me, sharing that Nikki passed.
I miss her. A Nikki-sized place will always remain in my heart. Not a hole, a vibrant touchstone that will carry on our friendship.
Godspeed my friend.
